  2. What is a Web Page? • Web pages are a combination of text and graphics, wrapped in a special “markup” language. • The markup language (Hypertext Markup Language – HTML) is used to tell a browser how to display the page.

  4. Building a Web Page • Three ways to build a web page • Use a text editor such as Notepad and write the HTML yourself • Use MS Word and save your file as a web page • Use a specialized web page editor, e.g.: • Nvu • Expression Web

  5. Recommended Way • Use a special web page editor • Has features to make editing of web pages easier • Works like a word processor, but places HTML code/tags “under the covers” so you do not have to work with them directly • Generates relatively “clean” HTML code • Choice of tools • Nvu: relatively easy to use, available for free • MS Expression Web: more robust, also available free

Publishing Your Web Page • Your web page must be placed on a web server for it to be accessible to others • Typically, this means your HTML files will have to be uploaded • Your web pages should have a file suffix of either .htm or .html • Once you have uploaded your web page to a file server, it will have a URL (web address)
