  1. Galapagos Islands

  2. Galapagos Islands history: The Galapagos Islands are in the Pacific Ocean, and were discovered March 10th, 1535 by Fray Tomas de Berlanga. The group of islands consists of 19 main islands and 40 small ones. The island was first mapped in 1570, and was called the “islands of the Tortoises”. They became a popular place for pirates to hide out, and at times were unable to be seen due to fog. The first person to actually settle on the island was Patrick Watkins, who got there in 1807. These days, the islands are a popular place to go visit, and not many people permanently live on the island.

  3. Animals native to the Galapagos Islands: The Galapagos tortoise: weighs up to 300 pounds, has a life expectancy of between 100 and 200 years. There are about 14 different sub-species. Penguins!!!: The only penguins found in warm water. The Marine Iguanas: Found only in the Galapagos Island are the marine iguana. They have black skin and are the only lizards in the world that live near the water.

  4. How the Galapagos Islands were named: The Galapagos Islands were named because of the turtles living there. The Islands were filled with these giant turtles, and after a few years, the visitors began calling the islands the Galapagos Islands.

  5. Culture The population in the Galapagos Islands is of around 20,000 and their main sources of revenue are fishing and tourism. Galapagos culture is a mixture between people that came from the Amazon Jungle and the coast of Ecuador. the elderly are given respect and are kept with one or more children. Godparents in Ecuador play an important role in the children's lives. Popular foods there are fish, beans, plantains, meat, white hominy moat and rice.

  6. Religions: Culture in Galapagos Islands is very dependent on religion and there are several different religious groups which live on the Islands.. Religion in The Galapagos Islands and Ecuador has caused severe tension and has led to many random acts of violence between two different regions, especially during World War Two. Folk Catholicism: This is a branch of Catholicism, and is a religion practiced regularly in the Galapagos Islands, and surrounding Ecuador. Roman Catholicism: This is also a popular religion in Ecuador, and many people in the Galapagos have caught on. There are many different branches of religions in the Islands, along with other religions, such as Jewish, Islamic, Protestant, ect.

  7. The Galapagos Islands In World War II • The United States considered the Galapagos very important in WW2. Since 1928, the US had been studying different options for a location of a base, and chose the island of Baltra in the Galapagos Islands. They began operations only five days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in March of 1942. The U.S. built 3 airstrips for this base, and the marines had their center in the nearby “Eolian Cove”. In total, the base could accommodate almost 6,000 men. This base played an important role in the war, and the last military men didn’t leave until the beginning of 1949.

  8. Charles Darwin in the Galapagos Islands On September 15, 1835, Captain Robert Fitz Roy landed in the Galapagos Islands as a part of a trip around our world. He was traveling with young naturalist Charles Darwin. They landed on Chatham Island, and traveled to a few other islands while they were there. Some people on the ship made maps of the island, while others (like Darwin) explored the island, documenting new species of plants and animals. This string of islands is still popularly known today as one of Darwin’s destinations on his famous journey.

  9. Languages! Most people in the Galapagos Islands speak a variety of Spanish, but Quichua, an old Inca language, is spoken by a lot of the Indian population. Besides Spanish, many different dialects, including English, are spoken on the islands.

  10. Pirates Ship logs and diaries show that somewhere around the 1400’s and 1500’s, pirates began hiding out in the Galapagos Islands, some staying for an extended visit, others only stopping long enough to retrieve more supplies for their journey. Many of England's most famous pirates were said to have been at these islands, a few of which are: Sir Henry Morgan, and Sir Richard Hawkins, cousin to Sir Francis Drake. Richard Hawkins did not stay long, because he found the condition of the island to be too desolate. Pirates continued using this island as a hiding spot and a supply post until the early 1700’s. "Near two centuries ago Barrington Isle was the resort of that famous wing of West Indian Buccaneers, which, upon their repulse from Cuban waters, crossing the isthmus of Darien, ravaged the Pacific side of the Spanish Colonies, and, waylaid the royal treasure ships plying between Manila and Acapulco." Herman Melville The Encantadas
