  2. Simile • A comparison between two unlike things using the words “like” or “as” • “Crunching like a mountain lion”

  3. Metaphor • A comparison of two unlike things without using “like” or “as”. • Normally uses “is” or “are” • “Dawn with the fingertips of rose” (morning) • “…But he seemed rather a shaggy mountain.” (Polyphemus)

  4. Personification • Giving human characteristics to nonhuman objects. • Example: “Death sat there huge.”

  5. Hyperbole • An exaggeration • “Two dozen four-wheeled wagons, with heaving wagon teams, could not have stirred the tonnage of that rock…” (boulder)

  6. Imagery • Language that appeals to the senses • “…while blood ran out around the red-hot bar. Eyelid and lash were seared; the pierced ball hissed broiling and the roots popped.”
