  2. What is Science? • Science is learning about the natural world through observation and experimentation.

  3. Science Skills • Scientists use skills such as observing, inferring, predicting, and classifying to learn about the world. Video

  4. Observing • Observing is using one or more of your senses to gather information. • Your five senses are site, smell, hearing, taste, and touch.

  6. Types of Observations • There are two types of observations: • Quantitative • Qualitative

  7. Quantitative • Quantitative observations deal with numbers and amounts. • How many squares?

  8. Qualitative • Qualitative observations are descriptions that can’t be expressed by numbers. • Color • Shape • Features

  9. Inferring • Inferring is explaining or interpreting your observations. • Inferences aren’t guesses, they are based on reason.

  11. Predicting • Predicting means making a forecast of what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence.

  13. Classifying • Classifying is the process of grouping together items that are alike in some way.
