NASW Code of Ethics “1.05 Cultural Competence and Social Diversity C) Social workers should obtain education about and seek to understand the nature of social diversity and oppression with respect to race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, political belief, religion, and mental or physical disability (NASW, 1999).”

  7. Important Considerations Similar-Attraction effect: We tend to recruit candidates just like ourselves due to the tendency to avoid those who are different. Diverse groups have a much greater chance of creativity and innovation. The “Intersection” allows different viewpoints and frames of mind to emerge (Johansson, 2006).

  11. Managing Diverse Teams Requires group management skills to avoid problematic group dynamics. Depersonalize conflicts. Maintain an open environment where all ideas get heard (Johansson).

  12. MANAGING DIVERSE TEAMS Promote policies and procedures that: demonstrate respect for difference, support the expansion of cultural knowledge and resources, safeguard the rights of and confirm equity and social justice for all people (NASW, 1999).
