Big Ideas in Fluids Fluids are an important component of many systems. Fluids have different properties that determine how they can be used. Fluids are essential to life.
Design Portfolio • Any working sketches/designs • Procedures on how to build prototype • Technical drawing (final blue-print) • Conclusions/thinking and learning responses • Design journal entries • Research information
Design Criteria/Scales • Page vii of Sci-Tech • Use this to create co-constructed criteria for your project • Give your ideas as a group • Compose a final co-constructed criteria for class
Safety • Must pass safety test in order to receive “license” to operate tools. • Any violation will result in rights to use the specific tool taken away.
Working With Scissors and Snips • Wear safety goggles • Carry scissors and snips by the blade end • Use tools below the waist level • Place the item to be cut close to the pivot point so that it is easier to cut • Snip items so they fall down onto the working surface • Secure the safety function/catch when snips are not in use
Working With Saws • Wear safety goggles • Use the saw below waist level • Secure the miter box to the work surface • Check that the saw blade is properly in place • Angle the teeth of the saw away from your body • Keep fingers and thumb of free hand away from the saw blade
Working With Glue Guns • Read and listen carefully for instruction • Be aware of First Aid precautions and treatment • Use glue guns in designated area • Wear safety goggles • Protect your work surface • Always glue down to the object • Use a stick to position an object being glued • Never put anything up the barrel of the glue gun • Have cool water available near your work station in case of a burn. Immerse the burn for at least ten minutes • Inform the teacher immediately
Working With Hand Drills • Wear safety goggles • Use the drill below the waist level • Change drill bits carefully • Check that the drill bit is securely in place • Drill on a flat, secured surface • Be sure the object you are drilling is firmly in place
