  1. HL7 Service-oriented Architecture Project Overview - Ontology January 18th 2010

  2. HL7 Service Ontology Some Questions Answered by a SOA Service Ontology: What are services in the healthcare domain? How should services expose how they are to be used? How do I know what services projects are underway? What are the categories of services? The differences between them? We have hundreds of services in our organization, how can they best be discovered and governed?

  3. HL7 Service Ontology Two initial audiences/purposes (there are others) • Education, • outreach, • Reusability • Architect • What do I need to make my service complete from a technical & business sense? • How will I consume other services? • How will my service be consumed?

  4. HL7 Service Ontology – viewpoints • Ontology definition - Methodology is key • "We can start by creating an ontology with 30 nodes or so with a considerable part of the nodes merged in from external SOA ontologies - the important aspect is to use a sound methodology that makes this extensible “ • Services Categorization • “propose a candidate list of ten or so categories of services in order to define the SOA Healthcare space, aid in educational outreach and, encourage reuse.” • Business Utility - Technical implementation is not enough • “communicate is the need to establish a policy that will specify what is necessary in service descriptions to ensure that participants understand and can discover and get comprehensive understanding of services. This would require, among others: great clarity of service descriptions that explain the real world effects; the provenance; the engagement; the technical and business requirements (including SLAs) and other content.” Participants come at this from very different viewpoints, but we’re learning to work together.
