Description • Capacity Building – con’t • How was it done? • Expert team of academics* acted as • Evaluators of responses to the Call September 2009 • Most responses where eliminated • Advisors on improving the response to the Call • Four projects were approved • Trainers dealing with innovation and indicators, September2010 • Training workshop in Pretoria for three teams • DEIP course in Senegal for one team • Mentors following a workshop to present reports • All reports accepted by Globelics • All will appear as UNU-MERIT Working Papers • A special issue of a journal is being discussed *UNU-MERIT Principal Investigator + four academics

  4. Description • Research of case study teams • Innovation in ICT services in the informal economy of Senegal • Telephone banking in South Africa • Farmer initiated crop innovation in KwaZulu-Natal • User innovation in firms in Maputo Province, Mozambique

  5. Outcomes • Capacity building • A new cohort of researchers able to respond to a Call for Proposals, to conduct research, analyse data and to prepare reports for publication. • Not all of these capacities can be attributed to the project. Some were there before. However, the project contributed to career development of all participants • Research • New knowledge about subjects studied • Link to innovation and potential indicators • Some policy influence

  6. Future Prospects • Project influenced IDRC in its creation of a new programme: Inclusive Innovation for Development (IID) • IDRC will have a meeting on IID after Globelics • The plan would be to develop a proposal for a new project based on this as part of IID • Michiko and Mulu can comment
