  2. Third largest island in Europe with Great Britain as its neighbor. A sovereign state and is part of the United Kingdom. The name Ireland derives from the name Ériu. The population of the island is slightly under six million. Ireland’s Geography

  3. Irish History • British and Irish Parliament passed the Act of Union in 1801. • A million Irish people died and over a million emigrated due to a famine. • In 1921 the Irish Free State was established. • Ireland becomes one of the richest countries in the Europe.

  4. Dialect • The Celtic language is spoken in Ireland. • Goidelic branch, is presently a minority language. • Celtic and English are officially spoken In Ireland. • Celtic is upheld the national dialect of Ireland

Holidays and Traditions • Saint Patrick‘s day is the National holiday. • Traditions--Dying rivers green, wearing green and kissing the blarney stone. • Hunt the Wren Day--Dressing up with masks, and playing traditional music • Halloween originated among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britian. • The Jack-o-latern orginated from Ireland.
