  2. Finch • Author’s maiden name was Finch • Finches are songbirds representing joy and freedom • They are brightly coloured and energetic • Goldfinch are symbols of determination and endurance • There are many variations of finches linking them to diversity and broad-mindedness

  3. Atticus • Roman orator and noble Titus Pomponius Atticus • Never took sides in political struggles • Stayed impartial • Known for sound judgement

  4. Scout • Name is gender neutral emphasizing Scout’s balance between male and female roles • Harper Lee questioned gender stereotypes in the American south • Scouts also are seekers of information which links to Scout’s curiosity

  5. Jem • Homonym for “gem” indicating value and worth • Symbolic role in the play is to show the maturing and understanding of the children

  6. “Boo” Arthur Radley • Boo is the nickname connected him to frightening, inhuman ghosts • Arthur means noble and courageous (King Arthur) • Boo’s shift in name indicates a shift in symbolic meaning as well

  7. Dill • It is used to flavour and preserve food • Dill adds ‘flavour’ and adventure to the Finch children’s lives • Charles means free man and has links to kings in several countries • While Dill has a few “Charles” moments in the book, his name does not change
