  2. Why global health in the curriculum? • U.S. trains physicians from around the world • U.S. students in other countries • Students in U.S. from other countries • Sharing of knowledge – health is global • Expectations of accrediting agencies

Why Global Health Curriculum • The world is accessible – people travel and so do vectors…West Nile, HIV, SARS, Avian flu, etc. • Numbers of immigrants living in the U.S./MI • Increasing global connectivity – make medical education and information available! • Ability to share data and what is happening elsewhere… • Ability to share experience, educate one-another • Ability to share expertise (Telemedicine) • Ability to share technology – reducing suffering and disease burden • Population health success: small pox, polio, yellow fever, with opportunities: malaria, Guinea worm, trachoma, diarrhea, rheumatic heart disease…

  4. We are not all the same • Our physicians and other health care professionals must be able to take into consideration: • Genomics • Environment • Exposure, sanitation, nutrition • Culture • Health practices • Life styles • Ability to advocate for global access to medications and technology…

IU Kenya Program • “Share the Journey - Share the Knowledge” • Graduates should excel at both the science and “heart”of medicine • Partnership with the sub-Saharan medical schools promotes responsible citizenship and health for the human family • Fosters integrity, service to others, and intellectual growth • All participants emerge from the program as changed persons, enriched with these core values

  8. ASANTE Consortium Mission • To advance health care, medical professional training, and personal growth through a partnership between a consortium of US academic institutions and medical schools in the developing countries of sub-Saharan Africa

U.S. Role (how collaboration can work) • Attending-Resident-Student teams to Moi University Hospital • Moi students to US for clinical rotations • Faculty development for Moi • Development of residencies at Moi • Community health research • Medication availability • Technology availability (x-ray, c-t, u/s, etc.) • Gates Foundation grant to support HIV treatment

Clinical skills training – benefit to US • Importance of H&P – especially with: • Unavailability of technology • Unaffordable technology • Treatment decisions / clinical judgment • We forget the value of clinical assessment in application of our technology and the importance of touch in the therapy/outcomes of our patients
