  4. National Weather Service Winter! • Wear mittens, they are warmer • than gloves. • Wear several layers of clothing. • Several layers are warmer than a single garment. Layers should include wool • and a windbreaker. • Wear a hood that covers your mouth. • Wear a hat and ear muffs. • Don't move away from the house • without a lifeline during a heavy • snow storm or blizzard.

  5. National Weather Service Spring! Heavy rain and melting snow can cause flooding Fog is dangerous. Stay away from roads. Drivers may not see you!

  6. National Weather Service Summer Thunderstorms Can Be Exciting!! They can also be dangerous! • Lightning • Tornadoes • Hail • Wind

  7. National Weather Service Lightning can hurt or Even kill you When you see lightning or hear thunder, get inside fast! As soon as you see lightning, count the seconds until you hear the thunder. If there are 5 seconds, the lightning was about a mile away.

  8. National Weather Service Tornadoes are Dangerous! • Tornado Watch: National Weather Service forecasts that a tornado may develop later. • Tornado Warning: A tornado has been sighted!

  9. National Weather Service If you hear a tornado warning… Get away from windows If you’re in school, listen to your teachers and remember your tornado drills! Go to the basement and get under a table or bench If there is no basement, go to an inside closet, bathroom, or hallway on the lowest level of the house.

  12. National Weather Service How the Doppler Radar “Sees” A Tornado Red and green pair show strong rotating winds!

  13. National Weather Service Hail can hurt! Ouch!! This is a record hail stone. It fell in Aurora, Nebraska on June 22, 2003. It is 7 inches in diameter! The best place to be is inside A house or a car.

  14. National Weather Service Strong Thunderstorm Winds Strong winds can knock down trees and blow loose things around. Damage from strong thunderstorm winds is very much like what a tornado can do, and it can be just as dangerous! Winds can be as strong as 70 to 100 MPH!!

  17. National Weather Service This is an example of the destructive power of a hurricane. Look at all the boats that are up on the land. They should be in the water!

  18. National Weather Service Have Your Mom or Dad Get A Weather Radio! What does a weather radio do? It gives information about the weather 24 hours a day! Warns of dangerous weather in your area! Schools, hospitals and other public places, even your home, should have one. Like a smoke detector, but for weather!
