  2. The Early Days • The first match of the Brazil national football team is generally considered to be a 1914 match between a Rio and São Paulo select team and the English club Exeter City F.C., which the Brazilian team won 2–0.

  3. Brazil hosted the 1950 FIFA World Cup which was the first tournament to be held after World War II. It is the only time Brazil has hosted the tournament to date (not counting the upcoming 2014 tournament). The 1950 tournament was unique in not having a single final, but rather a final round-robin stage of four teams; however, to all intents and purposes the deciding game between Brazil and Uruguayacted as that tournament's "final".

  4. World Cups • Brazil has won the World Cup five times - in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. More than any other nation. • Brazil is often ranked as the number one team in the world.

  5. Famous Brazilian footballers - Pele • Edison Arantes do Nascimento is commonly known as Pele. He is considered by many to be the greatest footballer ever. He has also represented the Brazilian government as Minister for Sport. He is footballing ambassador who is known throughout the world

  6. Ronaldo • Ronaldo Luiz Nazario do Lima is commonly known as simply ‘Ronaldo’. He is also nicknamed ‘The Phenomenon’. He has won two World Cups (1994 and 2004) and three FIFA World Player of the Year titles (1996, 1997 and 2002).

  7. Kaka • Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite is commonly known as ‘Kaka’. He is currently the FIFA World Player of the Year. He plays for AC Milan and it was his extra time goal which robbed Celtic of a quarter final spot in 2007 in the Champions League. AC Milan then went on to win the competition. He transferred to real Madrid in June 2009 for £56m

Brazilian Influence • Many Brazilian players leave Brazil to play in other parts of the world. • Brazilians are seen as being football ‘daft’ and the national team is followed by thousands wherever it goes. • When Brazil play, the country almost comes to a standstill as millions gather around TVs to watch the match.

  9. Brazilian football teams • The biggest derby match in Brazilian football is called the ‘Flu – Fla’ derby. It takes place between Fluminense and Flamengo. • Other big teams include Santos, Corinthians, Gremio, Sao Paulo, Palmeiras, Vasco de Gama and Belo Horizonte.
