  1. Flowers for Algernon Daniel Keys Reading Guide #3: Progress Reports 11 and 12 April 21 – 30

  2. PROGRESS REPORT 11April 21 • Charlie’s personality is changing. People may expect children to change as they grow up, but they do not expect adults to change. This may create a climate of fear around Charlie, and it may foreshadow future problems.

  3. PROGRESS REPORT 11April 21 • Charlie mentions this casually. However, mastering one foreign language is a difficult task; learning “a few foreign languages” is one more sign that Charlie has gone beyond normal intelligence.

  4. PROGRESS REPORT 11April 22 • After his experiences with his friends at the factory, Charlie is sensitive to being mistreated. This task seems so simple that Charlie may feel like the man is condescending and treating him like a fool.

  5. PROGRESS REPORT 11April 22 • Before the surgery, Charlie never made up lies because he always got caught (p. 48). Now, however, he realizes – with a certain sense of wonder – the potential for lying without getting caught.

  6. PROGRESS REPORT 11April 25 • Like Mrs. Flynn, Frank and Joe might be afraid of the changes they see in Charlie. They may also be envious of the recognition and bonus he receives. This episode may reveal that the men are not comfortable being around Charlie if he is on (or above) their level.

  7. PROGRESS REPORT 11April 27 • The two doctors are arguing over who should receive credit for discovering how to increase intelligence.

  8. PROGRESS REPORT 11April 27 • Charlie is having a difficult time socially. However, the doctors seem to be more interested in taking credit for the procedure than in helping Charlie cope with his problems. Charlie’s awareness of their motives shows his growing ability to perceive and analyze complex situations.

  9. PROGRESS REPORT 11April 28 • She compares a learner to a “giant sponge” and branches of learning to “steps on a giant ladder.” Because neither image is creative or original, Miss Kinnian appears to be of average intelligence. Charlie will soon surpass her intellectually.

  10. PROGRESS REPORT 11April 28 • She may hope that she didn’t misguide him in encouraging him to have the operation. She may hope that he won't lose his intelligence or be miserable with it.

  11. PROGRESS REPORT 11April 28 • (No) Charlie must develop emotionally just as he is developing intellectually. He thinks he loves her, but it is more like a schoolboy crush. • (Yes) Charlie recognizes that Miss Kinnian takes him seriously and cares for him deeply, so he does love her.

  12. PROGRESS REPORT 12April 30 • Again, Charlie may be feared because of the speed of his changes. This is foreshadowed by Miss Kinnian’s fear and Mrs. Flynn’s fear. • The others workers may resent Charlie because he makes them look foolish, just like they used to make him look foolish.

  13. PROGRESS REPORT 12April 30 • In the story, Adam and Eve bring destruction by eating fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Fanny is telling Charlie that knowledge brings evil. • In “The Monkey’s Paw,” the paw was enchanted to teach people not to try to change the course of fate. Is this similar to Fanny’s message?

  14. PROGRESS REPORT 12April 30 • Charlie may have increased his intelligence, but he has grown less happy. He has lost the people he thought were his friends, his job, and his place in society.
