  1. Public Policy Think of a school policy… and why it exists. Ex. No running in the hallways Why does this policy exist? To keep students safe… 1/5 Day 1

  2. Public Policy Schools have policies…….and so does the government. Policies that address our concerns and issues are called Public Policies. Public Policy – The attempt of government to address a social or public issue through a law or series of laws. 2/5 Day 1

  3. Public Policy Discussion Think about where you live. Identify something that has changed as a result of the government. Ex. A speed limit change, enforced curfew, noise limitations or pet restrictions… 3/5 Day 1

  4. Public Policy Text Review Using the textbook’s Index (page R76) locate a “Students Take Action” feature that interests you and read it and be prepared to share what you learn. Discuss how students can affect their communities. 4/5 Day 1

  5. Public Policy Home Learning Activity • Identify a problem in your neighborhood, community, or city that you believe can be fixed via public policy. • Collect 1 piece of evidence to validate the problem. • Ex. Digital photo, article, testimonial from a neighbor, audio recording… 5/5 Day 1

Public Policy The Public Policy Project! • Tasks: • Survey the community for supporting info. • Create a video highlighting the problem • Collect data about the problem • Develop three solutions to the problem • Write a letter to the mayor, commissioners representative, senator…discussing our ideas 7/13 Day 2

Public Policy Home Learning Activity • Share the project with a sibling, parent, or guardian • Ask them what they think of the problem. • For any question you ask, be sure that it is “open-ended”.Write down your questions and the answers you get. You must have at least two questions and two answers (can be with the same one person) 13/13 Day 2

Obtain camera/phone for recording, tomorrow. • Data Group: What data are you going to collect and how are you going to do it? • Solutions Group: Look up solutions to the problem 2/4 Day 3

Class will vote on best solution at the beginning of class today. Then develop an Action Plan of how to carry out your solution – who, what, when, where, why and how 2/5 Day 4

  27. Public Policy Home Learning Activity Tomorrow is the last day! Complete your assigned tasks tonight. All materials must be complete and final when you walk into class tomorrow. We will be working on assembling our board in class first thing tomorrow. 5/5 Day 4

  28. Public Policy – Day 5 Report It Out • Share what you did last night. • Set new tasks to ensure completion by the end of the period today. • Create a binder and tri-fold board (Product Group – groups 1-3). • Video group will become the letter writing group 1/4 Day 5

  29. Public Policy Work Day 3 of 3 • Survey Group: Finish graphing your data. Post your information with a caption on the board and put a copy in the binder. • Video Group: Have you video approved by the teacher. Then you will become the Letter Writing Group. • Data Group: Finish graphing your data. Post your information on the board with a captions and put a copy in the binder. • Solutions Group: Post your three possible solutions and your Final Solution with an Action Plan of how to carry it out on the board and put a copy in the binder. • After all groups finish these tasks, you will become the Product Group – see next slide 2/4 Day 5

Public Policy Work Day 3 of 3 • Letter Writing Group (was video group): • Write a professional letter to a state representative, the mayor/city manager, or commissioners about the problem and our selected solution with its Action Plan. • Product Group (all other groups combined): • After you finish your initial tasks today then….. • Make sure all components are on the board. • Add a title and captions to the board • Add visuals to make the board look appealing 3/4 Day 5
