  3. What is a brief? • A brief is simply a short (brief) version of a full business report • In the real world, briefs are often used to get an overview of an issue • Your job is to determine the most useful information – select what to put in and what to leave out. Think about your audience – what do they need to know about the issue?

  4. Task instructions • 500 word brief (brief report) • Analyse a contemporary management issue – • is this issue relevant to your business? • what are the advantages and disadvantages to your business? • what recommendations would you make as to how your business might deal with the particular issue?

  5. Marking criteria

  6. Structure of the brief

  7. How to write a brief: tips • Find sources on your topic and take notes from each: • Remember that you are looking for information on the issue in general, how it might be relevant (or not) to your business, and its advantages and disadvantages (i.e. the impact it could have on your business) • Use your notes to identify the key points – keep in mind that the brief should only include the most important information. Think about your audience. • Ensure that you have evidence to back up your ideas – particularly around the advantages and disadvantages

  8. Example topic • Contemporary management issue: 3D printing • Example brief:

  9. Summary • Use your words wisely – be clear and concise and stick to the main points • Back up your ideas with evidence from the sources you have read • Ensure your recommendations are directly linked to your analysis of the management issue
