  1. Information Modelingand Database System Course Introduction

  2. Classes • 070125803 Information Modeling and Database System • I-MIT • 761904 Advanced Database Management • I-MMIS • Friday 18.00 – 21.00

  3. Course Description (I-MIT) • Data storage structure, data level, information modeling, concepts of database systems, database system architecture, database design and case studies, middleware, relational algebra and concept of Structured Query Language (SQL), query processing, transaction management, database integrity and security, database management should demonstrate their abilities to apply the knowledge to effectively solve database related problems. Students will also research published works in data modeling and database technology. Messed up typo even in curriculum spec!

  4. Course Description (I-MMIS) • This course studies the advanced theoretical and practical foundations of database management. The topics include a brief review of classical issues surrounding design, analysis, and implementation of databases, both from a micro and a mainframe perspective; current and emerging issues in the database field; analysis, design, and implementation of web databases, the object-oriented data model paradigm, the use and management of automated design and support tools (e.g., CASE) from a database perspective, and data security.

  5. Course Objectives Students should: • Understand the main concepts of database technologies • Be able to design database and understand the application of normalization • Be aware of state-of-the-art database technologies • Be able to apply knowledge to effectively solve database related problems.

  6. Timetable

  7. Timetable

  8. Lecturer’s Profile • SuchaSmanchat, PhD • PhD in Information Technology, 2012 • Monash University, Australia • Master of Science in Information Technology (International Program), 2006 • King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok • Master of Information Technology (Minor Thesis), 2005 • Monash University, Australia • Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Engineering), 2002 • King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang

  9. Research Interests • PhD Topic: Scheduling Parameter Sweep Workflow in the Grid • Read posters outside my room • Upcoming project • Cost-based scheduling algorithm for parameter sweep workflow • Workflows • Scientific / Grid workflow • Grid computing • Grid workflow scheduling • Cloud (still a newbie)

  10. About me • I’m a lazy person • Don’t call me ‘professor’, • ‘Peach’ or ‘Sucha’ will do • Tell me if I speak too fast! • Don’t expect me to reply email during weekend • Other interests • Animes (lots of them) • Online games (Final Fantasy XIV & Diablo III)

  11. Lecturer’s Contact • Counseling Hour • Sucha: 3A05 (third floor), Monday afternoon • Email: sucha.smanchat@acm.org • Under normal circumstance • Mobile phone number will not be given to student • I play Facebook but I’m not adding you either

  12. Evaluation • Midterm Examination 30% • Final Examination 30% • Database Design Assignment 20% • Paper Report 20%

  13. Database Design Assignment • Group assignment (2-3 persons) • Detail to be announced in week 5, to be submitted before new year • Mark distribution (20%) • Entity-relationship model 8% • Table mapping 7% • Normalization 5%

  14. Paper Report • Group assignment (2-3 persons) • Select one of the following topics • Unstructured Database (XML Database) • NoSQL • Data Grid • Approximately • 1,500 words for group of 2 • 2,000 words for group of 3 • At least 8 reliable sources, properly cited and listed at the end of the paper

  15. Paper Report • Your report should at least cover • What it is and why should we use it? • Technologies involved • How does it fit in organization? • Pros & Cons • Wikipedia is a good place to start but not a good reference • To be submitted and presented in week 13 (Feb 1st, 2013) • Mark distribution • Paper 15% • Presentation 5%

  16. Plagiarism Matter • What is plagiarism? • Do NOT copy-paste • Penalty applies • Paraphrasing must be cited • Direct quotation must be put in quotation mark • Having more references cited is not bad

  17. Referenced Materials • C. J. Date, “An Introduction to Database Systems”, 7th Ed., Addison-Wesley, 2000. • Abraham Silberschatz, Henry F. Korth, and S. Sudarshan, “Database System Concepts”, 3rd Ed., McGraw-Hill, 1997. • Jeffrey A. Hoffer, V. Ramesh, HeikkiTopi, “Modern Database Management”, 10th Ed., Pearson Education, 2011. • Student may use other books (or later editions) that cover the topics specified in this course.
