Empowering Rural Women: Savitribai Phule Mahila Mandal's Journey in Maharashtra

The Savitribai Phule Mahila Mandal, operating in Beed, Maharashtra since 1988, is dedicated to addressing the triple burden of caste-based discrimination, gender inequality, and poverty faced by rural women. Founded under the guidance of Adv. Ekanath Awad, the organization empowers women through leadership development, income generation, and access to productive resources. With a vision for a just society, SPMM works on various initiatives including women's literacy programs and gender mainstreaming campaigns to uplift marginalized communities and ensure their right to socio-economic participation.

  2. GENESIS • Rural women’s suffering is three fold: caste based discrimination, gender based discrimination and utter poverty • Adv. Ekanath Awad created awareness in Marathwada region of Maharashtra through Rural Development Centre (RDC). • Women’s from different villages of Bid district of Maharashtra asserted their participation and formed group Savitribai Phule Mahila Mandal to bring gender issue at core. • Savitribai Phule Mahila Mandal (SPMM), started its full function since 1988-89.

  4. VISION A Just Society With Equal Rights Which Ensures A Life Of Dignity And Self Respect.

MISSION Marginalized communities are mobilized and organized – • To access productive resource like land water, knowledge, skills and finance for sustaining their livelihood • To engage them effectively in decision making and governance process and • To ensure opportunities for women in socio-economic and political spheres.

  14. ACHIEVEMENTS • Resources are now owned by Women. • Resources for livelihood has been created by women. • Increased socio-economic status • Increased level of girls’ education • Age at marriage for girls is increased from 13 years to 19 years.

  15. IMPACT • Women’s are organized cutting across the caste • Asserting participation in social, political, cultural, educational arena through leadership and pressure group. • Conscientization of Right to Livelihood. • Exercising acquired knowledge for overall village development.
