  4. THE REASONS • Japan joined the Axis Nations • US trade embargo on Japan was hurting their economy • Wanted the US to be scared and stay out of the war • Wanted to be a world power

  5. THE PROBLEMS WITH THE ATTACK - FOR THE US • “All eggs in one basket!” • Surprise attack from “unknown” enemy • Too many assumptions • Bad timing for inspections and transportation • Poor communication • Panic

  6. THE PROBLEMS WITH THE ATTACK -FOR JAPAN • Gave up the third attack • Smoke • Three main targets were absent • Overestimated the emotional factor

  7. THE STATISTICS • Japan used 105 high-flying bombers, 135 dive-bombers, and 81 fighter planes • The attack took two hours • 18 warships, 188 aircraft and 2,403 men were lost • December 8, 1941 - declaration of war
