Objectives • Review latest updates and developments in Initial Teacher Education across the Sussex Partnership including selection for 2014-15. • Reflect upon successes of 2012-13 and evaluate 2013-14 so far (Evaluate induction, student progress, SD, monitoring & reporting procedures, school-based training) • Consider how to achieve our improvement priorities for 2013-14.

  4. Schools Direct Salaried finances 14-15 • Schools receive training grant • £19k (for Physics, Maths, Computing, Chemistry, MFL) • £14k(for English, History, Biology, Geography, Music,D&T) • DfE pay to Lead school via LEA. Lead school distributes to partnership. • School pays University £3k for training to QTS. • SD Salaried trainee can opt into PGCE(PP) by paying for M level assessment of assignments.

  5. SD Training finances 14-15 • Student receives loan of £9k for course fees. • Student pays University £9k with loan. • University pays lead school £3k for school based training and uses £6k for training, validation of QTS and PGCE (subject) award.

  6. Money, money, money … PGCE – Payments to follow end of November and March SD – Payments to follow End of November, March and May Supply cover for university attendance increased from £150 to £200

  7. Update:The Allocations Challenge Study our allocations for 2014. What are the key opportunities? What are the risks or problems? Are there any priorities for the wider partnership?

Recruitment and Selection • UCAS ITT – candidates have three simultaneous choices • University selection days every two weeks • Written tasks, presentation, group interviews, follow up interviews as required. • Followed by school based interview for SD; half day school trial for core PGCE (£20 each) • University partnership quality assurance – visits and moderation

  10. CS2: School based research • Optional module (30 credits; free to PGCE/SD). • Small scale classroom research project in 2nd placement. • Topic of interest to student and school. • Assessed by presentation at student research conference, 30th May. School based colleagues welcome to attend.

  11. SEND Specialist strand • Up to 15 applicants deemed good or better. • 2nd placement in special school (24 Feb-Easter), returning to fist placement for summer term (=SD model). • PGCE school PTs to be approached.

  12. Moderation of Professional Practice 1 • PTs to moderate: visit/ co-observe in another partner school before end of January. • Cover paid (£100 per half day) • Advanced Mentoring Certificate criteria • Expressions of interest please.

  13. The Subject Knowledge Enhancement Challenge SKE available for 2013-14 Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, MFL, Computer Science 2 months to 6 months University based or Distance Learning Can run alongside ITE Strongly recommended

Strengths from our Self Review • The Quality of our trainees: • Strong selection. 94% met or exceeded initial target grades. • Over 75% of trainees entered with 2.1 or above. • By the end of training 95% PGCE and 100% GTP were graded 1 or 2 in June 2013 (up from 90% in June 2012). • The class of June 2013 is highly employable: • 95% of 11-18, 100% primary and 100% GTP are now employed teachers. • Highest ever % graduating with M level PGCE. From 2013-14, ALL PGCE graduates will be M level.

  20. Partnership Improvement Priorities • Retention: From 86% in 2012-13 to 90%+ (Physics, Maths & MFL as target areas). Developing trainees’ experience, skill and confidence with: • Assessment (summative & formative) • Working with pupils from BME and/or EAL backgrounds. • The use of ICT in the classroom. Preparing trainees to work with the 2014 National Curriculum.
