  2. Physical and Chemical Properties Physical Properties Chemical Properties • Iodine is a nonmetallic, near to black solid. • The element has a relatively low melting temperature of 113.7C. • Slowly sublimes to violet vapor (possibly harmful).

  3. Background and History • Iodine was first discovered by French chemist Bernard Courtois in the year 1811. • It was isolated by Courtois in the same year. • The element was discovered in France. • The name “iodine” has its roots in Greek ioeides, meaning violet, or purple.

  4. Everyday Use • Iodine is necessary for some animals, synthesizing thyroid hormones. • Iodine is also used for medical purposes, such as x-rays. • This is also used as radiation protection from any form of radiation.

  5. Iodine’s Bohr Model This is the set up of iodine’s electrons.

  6. Electron Dot Diagram This is iodine’s electron dot diagram. Iodine has 7 valence electrons.
