Born in Oxford, England, in 1157, Richard the Lionheart, also known as Richard I, became famous for his valor and leadership during the Third Crusade. Ascending to the throne in 1189, his reign was marked by military campaigns and neglect of domestic governance, as he prioritized the Holy Land. He spent much of his life in Aquitaine and married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191. His death in 1199 during conflicts in France resulted in a lasting legacy as a romanticized figure in literature and folklore, often depicted as a noble king in tales like Robin Hood.
