Objectives • Define Public Health and identify key activities of Public Health Professionals • Understand the differences between how public health professionals and other healthcare professionals solve problems and the reasons for the two different approaches • Apply public health problem solving approaches to various public health related scenarios • Design a public health awareness campaign for a public health problem in your community

  3. What is Public Health? Two popular definitions of public health: • “Public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play.”(APHA, 2017) • “The activities that ensure conditions in which people can be healthy. These activities include community wide efforts to identify, prevent, and combat threats to the health of the public.”(Institute of Medicine Definition of Public Health)

  4. What does a public health professional do? • Education and public awareness campaigns • Monitoring Community Health • Promote Preventative measures • Develop laws/policies • Make recommendations to government • Investigate diseases • Evaluate programs and ensure compliance

  5. How is public health different from medicine or other healthcare fields? Public health looks at populations while medicine treats individual conditions Public health designs solutions and prevention for communities and organizations. Public health rarely treats acute medical conditions.

  8. Public Health Awareness Campaigns • One of the most important jobs of public health professionals is to educate communities about public health threats. • This is often done as awareness or advertising campaigns. • Can you think of any public health campaigns that you have seen recently?
