  4. Union is strength What are the values and attitudes that the weak or the supporting ones have demonstrated in these scenarios? • fearlessness, courage, willingness to contribute and sacrifice, care for others, selflessness, mutual respect and support, etc.

Union is strength What opportunities may a crisis bring to those who unite against the “enemy/enemies”? • discovering more resources than they know before; • reflecting on the ways they see the world and react; • revising the preventive measures; • enhanced problem-solving skills, cooperation, self-understanding and mutual understanding; • strengthened relationships, resilience and trust • forgiveness and optimism, etc.

Scenario Discussion Each group member plays a role in the scenario and have group discussion on the following: • How will each of them feel?What are needed or needed to be done to ease up? • What has gone wrong?Is that something they can change or adapt? • What are the opportunities? • What can he or she do as a son or daughter? How? Do they need anyone to help or cooperate? Then act your views and suggestions out.

  7. Scenario 1 Yin is a S.4 student and leads a happy life with his mum Linda and 46-year-old dad Eoin. Yin has been over-protected by his parents and is a typical “Hong Kong Child”. In an accident, Eoin broke his legs and could not work as a supervisor of construction works any more, which has been his job for years.

  8. Scenario 1 Being a housewife for long, Linda could not hide her dismay, though she did not collapse immediately. Yin was too worried that he became very quiet. His best friend, Lun, soon realised that something went wrong …

  9. Scenario 2 Ming and Carl live in a single family. Their mom works all day and they are brought up by their grandfather. Their grandfather’s health has been getting poorer in recent years. He cannot take care of them and they have to take up the housework.

  10. Scenario 2 Ming has just promoted to S.6 and is facing a lot of pressure in exams. Carl finds his studies in S.4 get harder too. Because of her dad’s health, mom’s work has been affected and her boss complained about it. This year their grandfather has died and the family has fallen into a more difficult situation. Ming is absent from school often and his results get a lot poorer …

  11. Scenario 3 Sue’s parents divorced when she was in S.1. They had been quarrelling all the time and thus Sue didn’t feel upset. Instead she thought she could live a quieter life with her mom. Now her mom has a boyfriend and is planning to get married some time later. Sue accepts these changes readily and is looking forward to having a happy family again.
