  2. Spread the word to end the word • March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month • Wednesday, March 5th was the 6th annual awareness day Spread the Word to End the Word • What “r-word” are we talking about? • Respect • Responsibility • Retarded

  3. Spread the word to end the word • The word “retard or retarded” began as a medical term. Soon it gained popularity in society and became a slang word. Since then the medical community has stopped using the word “retarded” as a medical term. Society, however, has not stopped using the r-word. It has become a term for “stupid” or “dumb” used by people without a disability. The misuse of the r-word has further reinforced the stereotypes of someone with a disability being a lesser valued member of society.

  4. Spread the word to end the word • Article & Quiz • March 6, 2013- “Do you get why this word hurts so much?”

  5. Spread the word to end the word • The South Dakota Legislature passed Senate Bill 26 to strike the word “retard and retarded” from state law and it was signed into law by Gov. Daugaard on February 12, 2013. The new law went into effect July 1, 2013. • Think about it: If SD Legislature can agree on a bill to remove the r-word from state laws and the Governor signs it into law- could you find a better a word to describe how you are feeling?

  6. Spread the word to end the word • This lesson is not about being what is known as “politically correct” or infringing on your first amendment right of freedom of speech. This is about being responsible for the words you use and showing respect for others. It is about doing the right thing. Spread the word to end the word. ~Ms. Seeklander
