  3. Foreign Invaders • The Mongols • Genghis Khan’s decedents invaded and devastated the Middle East. • Baghdad was destroyed and the Caliph was killed. • Did promote trade and blended with M.E. Culture

The Crusades • Pope Urban II called for a “Holy War” against the Muslims. • Goal was to recapture the land of Christ. • Captured Jerusalem but was unable to hold on to it. • Europeans lacked modern technology of the Middle East. • Lasting impact • Muslims mistrusted Westerners • Europe wanted new Technology

  5. Saladin • Defeated the Crusaders and reconquered Jerusalem. • Drove crusaders to only coastal forts. • “People of the Book”-Crusaders were treated well.
