  1. Energy cyber-physical systems (e-CPS): evolving opportunities and emerging needs Invited Workshop Presentation Sudip K. Mazumder, Senior Member IEEE Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Director, Lab. For Energy and Switching-Electronics Systems University of Illinois, Chicago P. R. Kumar, IEEE Fellow, NAE Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Texas A&M University IEEE PES GM Washington DC, USA July 26, 2014 Acknowledgement: US National Science Foundation

  2. Evolving e-CPS opportunities

  3. Emerging needs of e-CPS: research Power, communication, information, sensing, financial networks Nano seconds to hours Some estimates: 100 X+ Data integrity, known/unknown undesirable pattern recognition Spatio-temporal power management and control with distributed functionalities under nominal and singular conditions Optimization in the presence of interoperability constraints Estimation in the presence of (real-time) data proliferation, uncertainties

  4. Emerging needs of e-CPS: education • Recognize that while core disciplines need to be well understood, the research opportunities are emerging primarily at the intersection of these disciplines. • New knowledge base (yielding new theoretical and laboratory-oriented courses) needs to be developed that addresses interdisciplinary and interfacial e-CPS education and delivered by next-generation e-CPS scholars and teachers. • Recognize that e-CPS education is a shared responsibility among industry and academia and requires an open mind on the part of the students and emerging researchers and designers.

  5. An illustration using our ongoing NSF supported e-CPS project on Boolean microgrid DER: Distributed energy resource PEI: Power electronics interface PDVL: Pulsating-dc voltage link (Patent pending) RESEARCH ISSUES: Discretized co-delivery of energy and data Event-driven control and communication Unified cyber-physical model Unified solid-sate electronics for low- and high-voltage interface Decentralized optimization over finite network capacity Transmission line effect for time varying multiple-input-multiple-output system SUPPORTING COURSES: Advanced course in power electronics for Boolean microgrid Control of cyber-physical energy systems Power semiconductor devices Information theory Network communication Optimal control Graph theory
