  2. R T S Applications Scholarly Teaching Combinations (Service Learning) The PhD is a research degree. Teaching, Research and Service do not stand alone. • Research is the “driver” of one’s career, e.g., proposing new courses, engaging local organizations, etc.

  3. R T S Applications Scholarly Teaching Combinations (Service Learning) Research should be integrated with and informative to teaching, e.g., “scholarly teaching” model. • Research should be applied and shared community-wide, e.g., “applied service” model.

  4. Dissertation Topic – the launching pad and specializations; will change over your career. • The importance of publications; theory; methods; applied research. • Network with colleagues: national; regional; campus-wide; “Lone Scholar” vs. “Research Team.” • Identify a paradigmatic issue and become a noted contributor to this issue/anomaly/problem; • New application of theory • New application of method Building a Research Agenda

Agencies, Foundations, Community, and Internal University Support; • Respond to Requests for Proposals and submit unsolicited proposals; • Interdisciplinary Approach; • Build research teams with a division of labor across universities; • Be willing to expand scope of work. • Example: quick response grant in 1989 led to base-line data set that made long-term funding more attractive • Follow the money – pragmatic approach • Transcend frustrations – grant competition is very competitive Successful Funding Strategies
