  2. Definition “Design” is the purpose, planning, or intention that exists or is thought to exist behind an action or fact.

  3. Westerners value • Mobility • Privacy • and Convenience. These 3 values make developing a sense of community almost impossible.

  4. African Proverbs about Relationships • Cross the river in a crowd and the crocodile won’t eat you. • Show me your friend and I will show you your character.  • Hold a true friend with both hands. • The friends of our friends are our friends. • A friend is someone you share the path with. • A small house will hold a hundred friends.

  5. Paul built relationships • More than 100 different people associated with Paul in the Book of Acts and in his letters. • He named 26 different friends in Romans16 though we have no record that he been to Rome yet. • He greets 11 people in Colossians 4 and yet we have no record that Paul had ever been to Colosse.

  6. Christ built relationships mean . . . Distance doesn’t determine relationship Social standing doesn’t determine relationship Time doesn’t determine relationship

  7. Faithful Relationships • Tychicus • Aristarchus • Epaphras

  8. Tychicus Probably the bearer of both this letter and the one we know as Ephesians. He was a native of the province of Asia and in Acts 20 he accompanied Paul on his last visit to Jerusalem. • dear brother, faithful minister, fellow servant v.7 Twofold purpose • that you may know about our circumstances • that he may encourage your hearts

  9. God’s Design

  10. Aristarchus • A native of Thessalonica who had been arrested at the time of the riot in Ephesus, accompanied Paul to Jerusalem and later on was with him on the journey from Caesarea to Rome, which meant he also experienced the storm and shipwreck • proved a comfort to me- denotes relief of pain. “comfort, solace, relief, alleviation, consolation, encouragement.” v.10

  11. Epaphras Mentioned in 1:7 as the founder of the Colossian church • He prayed constantly (v. 12—“always”) • He prayed vigorously (v. 12—“wrestling”). • He prayed personally (v. 12—“for you”). • He prayed sacrificially (v. 13—working hard”).

  12. Fractured Relationships vs.14 Demas • In Phlm 24 he is called “Demas... my fellow laborer” and is linked with three good men—Mark, Aristarchus, and Luke. • vs.14 he is simply called “Demas,” • In 2 Tim. 4:10 “For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world”.

  13. In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. Martin Luther King Jr.

  14. Redeemed Relationships vs.9 Onesimus • As a slave he is disposable property, an economic investment, a “thing”. As a runaway he could be executed, could be viewed as stolen property. Illegal to harbor. Recapture normally meant severe punishment. • a faithful and dear brother, who is one of you

  15. Redeemed Relationships • vs.10 Mark, the cousin of Barnabas • Acts 12:25; 13:13 Abandoned Paul and Cousin Barnabas on first Missionary Journey • Acts 15:36-40 Paul and Barnabas have a sharp disagreement about taking John Mark on second journey. • 2 Tim. 4:11 “Take Mark and bring him with you: for he is profitable to me for the ministry”.

  16. John Mark • Author of the Gospel • Missionary to Africa • Martyred in Alexandria
