What Affected His Life • His father went into debt, & Dickens wrote novels about his life but made it to where the people were different characters. • His father showed him a beautiful house called Gads Hill. • His family went to a prison wile he worked off the debts. • His hands were stained from working. (He Polished Shoes)

His Life • In 1812-Charles John Huffman Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England, on February 7 1812. • In 1827-His formal education ends; begins work for two legal firms. • In 1835-Contributes stories to the evening chronicle; engagement to Catherine Hogarth. • In 1837-First installment of Oliver Twist published. • In 1840-The Old Curiosity Shop begins serialization in Dickens new magazine, Master Humphrey’s Clock. • In 1854-Hard times begin. • In 1870-Charles Dickens dies on June 9th 1870.

  8. Charles Dickens life • when Charles was 15 he and his family had money problem. • When Charles father left he was very lonely. • Charles was born on February seventh.

  9. Charles Dickens Work • Charles worked in a shoe blacking factory. • His work mates where orphans. • Charles had a man who worked with him who he enjoyed so much, that he put him in the story Oliver Twist.

  10. Hobbies • When Dickens was young he often walked the streets of London. • Later on in his life started to sing to people. • After singing he wrote plays.

Similarities Of His Life And His Writings • Oliver twist was very similar to his life because they both where in factories. • Also he worked with orphans and in Oliver Twist there where orphans • In the Christmas Carroll his life is similar because its like his its like his boss was the scrooge

Early Life • Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth. • Charles was the second of there eight children. • John was a clerk in a payroll office of the navy. • Elizabeth went to a ball on the night that she gave birth to Charles. • When Charles was just four months old the family moved to a smaller home to cut expenses.

Father in Prison • Mr. Macabre in David Copperfield: was imprisoned for bad debt. • The entire family a parted from Charles and was sent to Marshalls along with their parents. • Charles was sent to work in Warren’s Blacking Factory and endured appalling conditions as Wallis loneliness and despair. • After three years he was returned to school, but the experience was never forgotten.

The Happy Childhood Years • When Charles was two, his father was transferred to London, and years later to Chatham , Southeast of London. • In Chatham he spotted the best years of his youth. • The boy next door… had a magic lantern which fascinated Charles. • Charles dated a girl named Lucy Troughill.

Siblings • The siblings were cared for by nurse-maid Mary Weller. • Mary Weller had a taste for the macabre and told the children great tales of ghosts and ghouls and deaths and birthing. • She loved to scare them and would often begin an evenings tales with moans and groans or terrifying shrieks. • Alfred died a few months after he was born. • Harriet died of smallpox when she was 3years old .

  17. Education • Charles job when he was young was a newspaper reported. • Charles best subject in school is social studies. • Charles was also good at sports.

  18. Ragged Schools • The Ragged Schools help him a lot. • Dickens ,as well as others, thought that education could provide a way to a better life for these children. • The movement got it’s name for the way children dressed. • They often wore tattered or ragged clothing.

Influences on Him • From a very young age Charles dreamed of becoming a gentleman he wanted a education. • When they moved to Chatham that really influence his life. • His parents did have some limits funds put aside to send to one of their children to a university or academy. • They sent fanny instead of Charles to a university or academy.

  20. Marriage • In April 1859 he married Catherine Hogarth, daughter of George Hogarth. • The same month he became famous for Pickwick Papers.

  22. Dickens Marriage • Charles Dickens met his future wife though his job as a journalist. • Catherine Hogarth: She was the oldest daughter of the editor of the evening chronicle, George Hogarth. • They became engaged in May 1835, when she was 19 and he was 23.

  24. His Family • Siblings: John and Elizabeth Dickens had 8 children. Charles was the eldest of the 8 siblings. • Elizabeth Dickens: She was the mother of Charles & the wife of John Dickens. When their money worsened, Elizabeth decided to help the family by opening a school. she was 19 years of age when she married John. • John Dickens: He had many wonderful qualities. He worked hard at his job in the Navy Pay Office & was loving to his wife, Elizabeth & children. He was a very neighborly kind of person & very kind to all. But he had one terrible fault: he spent more money then he had.

  27. Charles Dickens Life • Charles Dickens was born on February seventh. • His parents were John and Elizabeth Dickens. • He starts to use the name “Boz” in 1836. • He publishes the “Pick-Wick Papers”. • In 1836 he marries Catherine Bogarth.

  28. His Marriage • He and Catherine (Kate), get engaged in May 1835. • They got engaged when she was nineteen and he was twenty-three . • Then they got married. • Then they got divorced.

  29. Journeys In America • When he and Kate went to America they rode on a steam ship called the Britannia on January 4, 1842. • He sailed to Boston. • He left and went back to England because he fell ill. • America viewed him asan inspiration and he was a great admirer to them.

  30. His Death • He falls ill and gives a reading of farewells in Ireland and England. • He died of a mild stroke. • He dies on Gads Hill on January 9,1870.
