What is the Weighted Pupil Unit? • The unit of measure used in determining a uniform cost for educating each student • One WPU usually equals one student • Additional WPUs are allocated for specific pupils or programs • The value of the WPU for FY 2003 is $2,132 - $16 higher than last year • For FY 2003, 627,795 WPUs were allocated by the Legislature • WPU funding will equal $1,338,458,940 in FY 2003 See the Public Education Data Book, Page 26

Utah Ranks High in Teacher Salary Comparisons • There are Approximately 25,214 (FTE) Instructional Personnel in Utah. • 22,210 (FTE) Hold Teaching Positions • 3,004 Hold Non-Teaching Positions • The Average Teacher Salary, Including Benefits and Career Ladder Earnings = $53,940 • Utah Ranks #4 in the Nation for Percent Change in Average Teacher Salary for 1990-91 to 2000-01. • In the Western Region Utah Ranks #3 in Highest Average Salary for Teachers.
