  4. Planning Phase • Research Team • Define Question • Identify Population • Identify Variables • Apply to IRB • Educate Staff • Literature Review

  5. Research Team • Define team members • Educate them on process • Verify completion of CITI training • Define every members role in the process

  6. Define Question • Define what outcomes we wanted to measure– then define the question • Clear • Concise • Measurable

  7. Identify Population • Exclusion and Inclusion criteria • Reduce bias • Define randomization • Determine how the patients will be consented into the study

  8. Identify Variables • What are we going to measure? • How are we going to measure? • What do we want to prove/disprove (hypothesis)

  9. IRB • Application • Expedited Approval • Maintenance of Integrity of the Study

  10. Educate Staff • Make “cheat sheets” • Demonstrate how to complete paperwork • Give people the “why” • Support and encourage questions • Accountability • Invite them to Participate

  11. Literature Review • Submit a request to library • Review with team

  12. Data Collection and Analysis • Construct tool • Define Collection Process • Identify Statistical Analysis

  13. Findings • Apply statistical analysis as appropriate • Review with the team • Present to staff • Define what the next steps are to be

  14. Discussion/Recommendations • Identify weaknesses in the process • Identify what needs to be done in the future • Identify the extent to which findings can be applied to the population

Translating Findings Into Practice • Educate staff on findings of the study • Change the order sets for all Spine surgeons • Change all order sets to have the Cooling blanket ordered on all lumbar fusion patients • Order 10 new machines to accommodate all lumbar fusion patients • Present at all campuses’ orthopedic councils

  16. Evaluate Implementation Outcomes • Continue to monitor outcomes from implemented changes
