Review and Observations on Chapter 6: Demand Side of the Economy and Supply-Use Tables

Chapter 6 provides an explicit overview of the demand side of an economy, particularly through practical illustrations of the interrelationship between industries and products, ideal for beginners in national accounting. The text highlights areas for clarity, such as correcting references in tables and refining definitions, especially regarding private consumption. It underscores the importance of Supply and Use Tables (SUT) for accurate GDP estimation and emphasizes the need for reclassification of activities. Suggestions for clearer definitions and categorizations are made to enhance understanding.

  1. COMMENT ON CHAPTER 6(USE TABLE) The presentation was explicit with practical illustration of the interrelationship between Industries and the Products.

  2. UseTable • It is a good practical demonstration especially for beginners(compilers of NAs). • Chapter 6, describes the demand side of an economy with definition on the components that constitute the demand side.

  3. Observations • Paragraph 109, line 5 ‘or’ should be ‘and’ • Quadrant 1, line 4 in bracket in table ‘2’ should be table ‘4’. • Quadrant II, line 7 table ‘2’ should be table ‘4’ and in line 8, there was an omission of the word final after NPISH.

  4. Comments • In table 4, total industry output, which comprises GVA and IC, was at basic prices. Further clarification needed because if add GVA at basic price with I C at purchasers prices, why arrive at total industry output at basic prices?.

  5. HHs F C E • I’m not comfortable with definition given in the first sentence of paragraph 145. Suggestion • Private consumption corresponds to the value of goods and services used for the direct satisfaction of human needs, whether individual or collective.

  6. USAGE • Since countries are at different levels developments in GDP compilation. • The 1993 SNA recognises that a Supply and Use Table (SUT ) which describes, for each product, all the sources of supply and all the uses to which that product can be put, and for each industry, all the inputs and outputs, provides the most reliable possible estimate of GDP at current or constant prices and recommends that statisticians use them in estimating GDP

  7. Challenges • Steps to be taken before using the manual. • Reclassification of activities using ISIC • Product using CPC
