  2. PAL Program The PALS program utilizes basically three assessments each week: • PALS passes • Power School logins/teacher emails or drop-ins • PALS weekly progress reports

  3. PALS Data • The information is then processed at our weekly team meetings. • Every day during a resource period they have to complete an “One Minute Essay” based on the data of that week. This can change at any moment based on the student’s behavior.

  4. One Minute Essay (Teacher-Student Communication Log) • A one-minute essay question is a focused question with a specific goal that can, in fact, be answered with a minute or two. • Sometimes this does led into a journal entry. • The students can answer in a drawing, a few sentences or in whatever way they want to answer the question.

  5. Sample One Minute Essay • Congratulations on getting a “B” on your Geometry Test. How did you study for that test? • The school rule says “No sagging of pants” (attach copy of the school rules)-why is this still on issue on your weekly progress reports? • I see Mrs. G gave you a detention for your second tardy to her class. What is your strategy to be on time from now on? • What are your plan on getting caught up on your missing assignments?

More Sample One Minute Essays • Why do you think students are not suppose to use their cell phones in class? • What is the pros and cons to being on escort? • Welcome back-What are you going to do so that you do not have to go back to Braun? • I am terribly upset with your behavior-you are making a choice….If you want to talk you know where I am at. • How would you feel if you received a phone call from the dean that your son was involved in a fight? • What is the purpose of rules?

  7. Outcomes • There is a strong communication between myself and my students. • This helps them self-assess. • They are able to process the incident/problem appropriately. • The students are forming groups to help each other. • Improving their written communication skills.
