  1. Weathering Frost shattering or freeze thaw weathering

  2. Weathering • Weathering is the breakdown and decomposition of rocks in-situ. • It is small-scale natural breakdown of rock. The weathered material forms a layer which lies on to of unaltered rock and is known as regolith.

  3. Types of weathering • Physical(or mechanical) weathering • Chemical weathering • Biological (or biotic) weathering – can be either physical or chemical.

  4. Frost shattering Where temperature fluctuates around 0ºC. • Water enters joints and cracks in the rock. When the temperature drops below 0ºC the water freezes and expandsas it changes to ice. • After repeated freezing/thawing the cracks widen and the rock shatters. • Rock fragments accumulate beneath crags or cliffs as scree (or talus).

  5. The Main type of weathering on Denali is Frost shattering or freeze thaw weathering

  6. Frostwedge Scree slope or talus
