  1. Comparative Writing Introductions and Conclusions

  2. Thesis Your thesis is the controlling idea behind you essay. It should: • State your opinion on the subject • Present one main idea • Use very few pronouns (He, She, It) and generalities (things, stuff) • Rarely use the word “I” (never “I think” or “I am going to argue”)

  3. Thesis Formula Thesis= I think+topic+verb+point Example: I think the movie Vampires Suck (topic) is (verb) the worst parody ever made (point). Now remove “I think.”

  4. Identify the Elements of the Thesis Formula I think my pet boa constrictor, Sir Pent, is a much better bodyguard than my Chihuahua, Fang. I think that school athletes should receive homework passes on weeknight games. I think that St. James Middle School must pass a rule that requires all students to cut their hair above eye level.

  5. Now You Try I think (insert the name of a singer, actor, or athlete) is (insert your point). Now get rid of I think

  6. Our Paper What are we trying to say about “The Highwayman” and “The Cremation of Sam McGee?” • Both are narrative poems • Both use figurative language • How do they use figurative language? Are they successful? Your thesis statement should begin “The Highwayman” by Alfred Noyse and “The Cremation of Sam McGee” by Robert Service are both narrative poems that use figurative language

  7. Introductory Statement or Hook A hook is the first line or two of your essay. It is a writing technique used by authors to grab the attention of their reader.

  8. Introductory Statement or Hook • Definition—What is figurative language and why do writers use it? • Example—Come up with an original example of figurative language and compare it to its literal counterpart. • Quote—Quote a song lyric or line of poetry that you like that uses figurative language and explain why it is powerful.

  9. Model • Figurative language is writing or speech that is not meant to be taken literally. Many authors use figurative language to express their ideas in creative and vivid ways. • While it is easy to say “the Colts beat the Giants last night,” figurative language can help communicate the idea with more vivid accuracy. For example, “the Colts’ defense crushed Eli Manning like a bug while Peyton was king of the field.” • When Kesha sings, “your love is my drug,” she is, like many writers, using figurative language to express how she feels. The point that she is trying to emphasize with her metaphor is that she is addicted to being close to her man.

  10. Now You Try Come up with a definition, example, or quote of your own to begin your paper.

  11. Concluding Paragraphs In your concluding paragraph you must: • Restate your topic Alfred Noyse’s “The Highwayman” and Robert Services “The Cremation of Sam McGee” • Restate the main points of your essay The authors use a variety of figurative language including metaphors, similes, personification, and hyperbole • Restate your thesis statement IN DIFFERENT WORDS Explain the positive or negative effect figurative language has on the poems
