  2. Founded by refugees fleeing the Huns in 5th Century • Situated on series of islands behind marshland • Originally part of Byzantium empire but became increasingly independent city state

  3. Sophisticated political system; historically the world’s most successful republic • Ruled by Doge (Duke) who is elected from members of senate • The senate however is an oligarchy – only male members of certain families can be in the senate

  4. No Venetian nobleman was allowed to command more than 25 men • This meant the army came under the command of a paid professional from outside Venice

  5. Wealth of city came from trade due to its advantageous location and from art looted during the crusades • Became a leader in art, architecture and printing (invented the paperback book) • Expanded to take strategic naval sites: Corfu, Crete, Cyprus (1489)

  6. Popes often angry with Venice because of their general tolerance of other religions • During the Catholic reformation no one was executed in Venice
