Direct speech vs. Reported Speech DIRECT SPEECH Sam said, “I paid this month’s rent today.” Cristine told her husband, “I will call the company to connect our internet.” The landlord told me, “I will repair your A/C tomorrow.” REPORTED SPEECH Sam said that he paid this month’s rent today. Cristine told her husband that she will call the company to connect their internet. The landlord told me that he will repair my A/C tomorrow.

  3. Reported Speech Structure Landlord: “I left a letter on the door.” Name/pronoun + said + /that + spoken phrase William said the landlord left a letter on the door. William said that the landlord left a letter on the door. Sarah: “You can’t skateboard on the road.” Name/pronoun + told + object + that + spoken phrase Sarah told her son that he can’t skateboard on the road.

  4. Reported Speech • Use reported speech to tell what someone says without using the exact words. • In direct and reported speech, the verb tell needs an object. The verb say does not. • She toldme that my dog was in her yard. • She said that my dog was in her yard. • Pronouns and possessives change to keep the original meaning • Oscar said, “The homeowner’s association will meet at my house.” • Oscar said the homeowner’s association will meet at his house.

Reported speech in formal & informal English My neighbor told me, “You’re son’s music is too loud!” • Formal English - change verbs in the reported speech to past tense • My neighbor told me that my son’s music wastoo loud. • Informal English – keep the same verb tense • My neighbor told me that my son’s musicistoo loud.

  6. Practice 1: Find the reported speech One of my neighbors smokes all the time. I told him that smoking wasn’t allowed in the building. I also told him that my children are getting sore throats. Practice 3: Using said Ivan: “My neighbors’ kids get up early and play and wake my wife and me up.” Answer: Ivan said (that) his neighbors’ kids got up early and played and woke his wife and him up. Victoria: “The hallway in our building always smells of strong cooking odors from the restaurant next door.” Answer: *Victoria said (that) the hallway in her building always smelt of strong cooking odors from the restaurant next door.

Practice 4: Using told Adina: “My neighbors have visitors at 2:00 in the morning, and they sometimes ring my doorbell by accident.” Answer: Adina told me that her neighbors had visitors at 2:00 in the morning, and they sometimes rang her doorbell by accident. Ming: “We live right near a fire station, and the sirens wake our kids up all the time.” Answer: Ming told me that they live right near a fire station, and the sirens woke their kids up all the time.

  11. Practice 5: Putting it all together With a partner, explain a problem that you had with a neighbor. What did you do? What did you say? If you can’t think of a problem, use the example from Practice 1.

  12. Put It in Writing: Formal Complaints I have called you several times, but you did not return my phone calls. My stove and oven are broken, and they need to be fixed or replaced. I checked my lease, and it says that the landlord is responsible for fixing all appliances. Please send a repairman to my apartment as soon as possible. Thank you for your time.
