  2. Transmutation • The conversion of an atom of one element to an atom of another. • Ex. Radioactive decay • Occurs naturally • May be forced (induced) • Bombarding

  3. Rutherford (1919) • 1st induced (forced) bombardment • Demonstrated that nuclear reactions can be induced • Discovery / support of the proton

  4. Induced Transmutation • A process of striking nuclei with high velocity charged particles • Particle Accelerators = “atom smashers”

  5. Transuranium elements • Atomic # equal to or greater than 93 • Produced in a lab • Induced via transmutation • radioactive

  6. Radioactive decay rates • Radioactive isotopes • not uncommon on Earth • different decay rates • HALF LIFE = the time required for one half of a radioisotope nuclei to decay into its products

  8. Radiochemical dating • Radioactive isotopes can be used to determine the age of an object • Radiochemical dating = the process of determining the age of an object by measuring the amount of a certain radioisotope remaining in that object. • Ex. Carbon dating
