  2. Do you know what biography means? • According to the dictionary, a biography is the description or history of a person’s life. • For Arnoldo Momigliano, a biography is any work, which can be oral or writtten and that talks about an individual’s life.

  3. According to Carino, a biography arouses the interest, caused by the description of a trajectory. Besides, there is a historical and social role played by biographies. This is because at the same time that they can make readers know, compliment, become aware of the one being described, it can, on the other hand, demoralize or criticize him/her. Biographies provide reflexibility and the individual can or not mirror the examples to be followed.

  4. Characteristics of biographies • It is a descriptive narration; • It is a short text with easy language; • There are just basic and fundamental aspects about the person’s life: • Name; • Date of birth; • Profession; • Facts about his/her job; • When the person died: place,date and reason of death, etc.

  5. Example: Ayrton Senna da Silva Motor racing driver, was born March 21, 1960 in São Paulo, Brazil. He began racing karts when he was four, moved to Formula Three racing in Britain in 1981, and joined a Formula One team in 1984. In a carreer, marked by agressive competitiveness and rivalry (especially with Alain Prost), he became World Formula One Champion 1988, 1990, and 1991, and had 41 Grand Prix Victories (second only to Alain Prost). He also built up a major business in São Paulo, marketing a range of Senna products. He was killed (May 1) during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.
