  1. Community Conversations: A Courageous Tool that Builds Public Trust

  2. Who is YOUR public? • How do you connect with them now? Marceta Reilly, PhD, PCC Coaching For Results, Inc.

  3. Often our approach is good PR • Newsletters • “Good Kid” stories • Charts & graphs of improving test scores • “Selling” building & expansion plans • Raising money for booster clubs and PTAs BUT, this is “talking at” not “listening to” Marceta Reilly, PhD, PCC Coaching For Results, Inc.

  4. Community as Partner • Community really DOES own the schools • Community does not like “mushroom” treatment • Understanding community values and ideas • Sorting out the squeaky wheels from the true voices • Connecting with those who are have few ties to the school Marceta Reilly, PhD, PCC Coaching For Results, Inc.

  5. This can be SCARY! • Afraid of shouting matches • Posturing • Being publicly scolded • Hearing unreasonable demands • Losing control of the message and the outcome Marceta Reilly, PhD, PCC Coaching For Results, Inc.

  6. Structured Conversations • Tool developed by Public Agenda • Helps keep the conversation civil • Helps people listen • To reasonable differences in opinion • To complexities of the situation • To gain trust and respect for alternate points of view Marceta Reilly, PhD, PCC Coaching For Results, Inc.

  7. How it works • It is an “invited” event • Reps from ALL sectors/stakeholders in the community • Talk about high-interest topics that you don’t have an answer to yet. • Use a discussion starter that outlines legitimate differences in approach • Assign people to heterogeneous discussion groupings. • Use trained facilitators • Lasts 2 to 3 ½ hours Marceta Reilly, PhD, PCC Coaching For Results, Inc.

  8. What are the Results? • Insights about areas of agreement • Better understanding of the “land mines” • Themes emerge for policy makers • More valid and reliable than the “squeaky wheel” method Marceta Reilly, PhD, PCC Coaching For Results, Inc.

  9. Caveats • Not product oriented • People want their efforts validated • Participant organizations need to be willing to take the info and use it • Public needs evidence that the information gained has been considered Marceta Reilly, PhD, PCC Coaching For Results, Inc.

  10. Fear? Admin will get bashed Critics will make unreasonable demands Hot-heads will dominate Overcoming! Make sure admin & teachers are reps in each group Speak honestly and be transparent. It will create trust. Use discussion starters and trained facilitators Becoming Courageous! Marceta Reilly, PhD, PCC Coaching For Results, Inc.
