Is James Bond an Anti-Feminist? • From a feminist viewpoint, James Bond could be seen as a few different things, but most of all, an Anti-Feminist. • Throughout most of the film Dr. No, James Bond overpowers every female character that he comes into contact with, And every female character who presents a threat to James, He Immediately approaches her with sexual tendencies her to disarm the character. • This shows that James Bond actively disempowers women, aiming to push them back from 'Heroes' to 'victims' in most of his movies. • "It is no coincidence that this film, which uses women as objects throughout the plot, is released during a time when women are fighting for equality in society. This film serves as a slap in the face to women, giving them a glimpse into the lives of the women with agency in the film and exactly what becomes of them due to their attempt to take power from Bond." So why did you ask the question? • In the more recent James Bond films, James 'Settles down' with one female character, showing the audience that James is trying not to be anti-feminist as his earlier showings. • This is eventually cancelled out by the fact that the female character is killed at the end of the film, showing that James should of been the hero, trying to protect the female 'victim' again. • "Quite refreshingly, the female lead of Casino Royale (2006) went above and beyond just being a Bond-girl. The beautiful Ava Green as Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, brought intelligence, sensitivity, strength and yet shades of vulnerability to the usually uninteresting and one-dimensional persona of a Bond woman. Her spunky and quick-witted character added to the pulsating drama of the latest Bond release, a touch of intellectual feminism by impressing the suave James Bond with her wit as much as with her breathtaking beauty." Conclusion - Mike’s Point of view • After reading the points I’ve made, I discovered that the creators, in the latest films, wanted to re-create James Bond as a more emotional character than he was in the original Films. Also, the creators have designed a more ‘feminist’ bond girl in the later films to counteract the very dominant James. • But Unfortunately, James Bond is always the one to survive in each story, this includes the death of the female character in Casino Royale, inadvertently showing the anti-feminism of James from his older movies (the damsel in distress).

  5. Conclusion – Sarah’s Point of view - As I have not seen all the bond movies I can only comment on the more recent movies. Although I do see the comparison in how the female characters are portrayed now in relation to how they were in some of the first films. I believe this is because of the time the first films were released, men were seen as the more independent of the two and in a relationship the woman would stay at home whilst the man went to work whereas now women are much more independent and have more say. It is nice to see the women in the more recent movies portrayed with more wit and intelligence rather than just a sex symbol.
