To conduct a major 12 month offshore sailing expedition, including two trans-Atlantic passages, and sailing in the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and the Eastern Seaboard of N America, providing deep water experience and challenging adventurous training to 150 RA Regulars and Reserves in order to help develop unit teams, Gunner sailing expertise, and Army Offshore sailing capability. Planning Four, then three, determined men in a pub… • 17 Gunner Units – Regular and Reserve • 150 personnel – Regular, Reserve, Veterans…. • 17 changeovers • 300 flights…. • 16 countries to get diplomatic clearance for • Risk Assessment and Safety – life raft, PLBs, • Charts – 450 charts and pilot books • Clothing – oil skins, sea boots, expedition logos… • Sponsors… • Insurance – for the yacht, people and MOD….. • Funding - £350,000 to run the expedition….. • Checking qualifications…. • Medical checks, controlled drugs… • Maintenance- keeping the yacht safe and sailing… • Equipment – life jackets, Category Zero requirements, communications, • What ifs………… • Training – Lifejackets, LRC, Medical, C*, First Aid, Sea Survival, Diesel • Media, publicity, marketing… “The quality of planning and C2 stands out ! “ COS ATG

Achievements and Benefits • Delivery of a truly adventurous, demanding and ambitious AT expedition • Building a new generation of offshore sailors • Enhancing the reputation and credibility of the RAYC and Gunner sailing expertise • Wider Defence Engagement • Managing Risk effectively and efficiently • Strengthening links between service clubs and the Army • Continuing to justify the provision of MOD Welfare Grants • Continuing to justify use of full time Army personnel as Bosuns • Completing over 150 qualifications in 253 days of training....so far • Recruitment and retention of young soldiers
