Classifying Organisms 6th grade blue book chapter 10 section2
Why do scientists classify • Scientists have identified one million organisms on earth • Similar organisms are put into groups • Biologists group organisms based on similarities, this is called classification. • This study is called taxonomy
Linnaeus • Gave organisms a two part name called binomial nomenclature, meaning two names. • First word give the genus giving the family, based on how closely related. • Second word describes a distinctive feature and it is the species.
Scientific name • Only the first letter of the first name is capitalized. • Complete name is written in Italics • This makes it easy for scientists to communicate.
classification • Domain • Kingdom • Phylum • Class • Order • Family • Genus • Species
Taxonomic Keys • Used to identify organisms • Series of questions
Evolution and classification • Darwin hypothesized that organisms go through evolution. • Species that are thought to have evolved from one another are closer related.
New information • Scientists will find information that can change how organisms are classified.
