  1. Assessment/Methodsfor capturing information from the patient

  2. Outcome Measures for Clinical Research • Information Gathering for Clinical Care

  3. Outcome Measures for Clinical Research 1) Demographic Database 2) Radioisotope Drooling Measurement 3) Drool Quantification 4) Teacher Drool Scale 5) Time Sampling 6) Behavior Medical Rating Scale 7) Parent Questionnaires 8) Goal Attainment Scaling

  4. Minimum database recommended for drooling studies 1) Name/address 2) Age/sex 3) Primary diagnosis 4) Phase of illness - acute vs. chronic 5) Intelligence level 6) Social factors - SES 7) Oral-motor dysfunction measure of severity 8) Eating method/ability 9) Positioning information 10) Severity of drooling quantitative measure (objective) perceived social and functional impairment (subjective) 11) Nutritional status 12) Dental Status 13) Medications 14) Other associated medical problems 15) Location of intervention - clinic, home, school, etc.

  5. Radioisotope Drooling Measurement Ekedahl and Hallen - 1973 Technitium - pertechnetate I.V. infusion, isotope measured in saliva @ 30 minute intervals.

  6. Drool Quantification Non-Invasive Technique Sochaniwskyj - 1982 1) collection cup and bonnet 2) vacuum pump 3) collection chamber 15 minute collection sessions X10/day

  7. Teacher Drool Scale (TDS) 1) No drooling 2) Infrequent drooling, small amount 3) Occasional drooling, on and off all day 4) Frequent drooling, but not profuse 5) Constant drooling, always wet

  8. Time Sampling 1) Stream of saliva 2) Bubble of saliva 3) Total 20 second observations @ 30 second intervals minimum of 40 data points/session Outcome expressed as a percentage

  9. Behavioral and Medical Rating Scale (BMRS) 1. Not at all 2. Just a little 3. Quite a bit 4. Very much 1. Restless, overactive ¹ 2. Excitable, impulsive ¹ 3. Disturbs other children ¹ 4. Fails to finish things he starts, short attention span ¹ 5. Constantly fidgeting 6. Inattentive, easily distracted ¹ 7. Demands must be met immediately, easily frustrated ¹ 8. Cries often and easily 9. Mood changes quickly and drastically 10. Temper outbursts, explosive and unpredictable behavior ¹ 11. Overly serious, sad, or sensitive 12. Change in co-ordination and/or body control ² 13. Fearful 14. Diarrhea/constipation (indicate) ² 15. Drowsy ² 16. Nasal congestion ² 17. Vomiting ² 18. Irritable ¹ 19. Dry mouth ²

  10. Parent Report Questionnaire 1) Medication use 2) Side effects 3) 5 point drooling scale of Camp-Bruno 4) Discontinuation of medicines

  11. Goal Attainment Scaling -Selection of observable, repeatable goals -Specified performance conditions -Criteria for success in measurable terms -Content validity measuring changes in clinical performance and the importance of observed changes

  12. Decision-Making and Communication Tool
