  1. Blog2: Globalrefininggroup.com Advantages Of Catalytic Converters A catalytic converter is a device that controls emissions from exhausts by converting toxic particulate emissions to less hazardous pollutants by catalysing an oxidation reaction. Although, it is an emission control device, it is also used in combination to exhaust system of automobiles and lean-burn engines, electronic generators, kerosene heaters, industrial stoves and mining equipment. Their use is directly dependent in response to environmental, or health and safety regulations, by local government. These converters combine carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O2) and other hydrocarbons (HC) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) vapours; these are, however, two way convertors. Three way catalytic converters also reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx). As said above, catalytic converters are of two types: 1.Two – way catalytic converter, having two functions: a.Oxidizing carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, and b.Oxidizing hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water vapours. Here hydrocarbons are partially and unburned fuel. Two – way converters are highly used in diesel engines, but they are superseded by three – way converters. 2.Three – way catalytic converters provide additional advantage of controlling emissions of oxides of nitrogen. They serve three tasks: a.Reducing oxides of nitrogen to oxygen and nitrogen, b.Oxidizing carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, and c.Oxidation of hydrocarbons to water vapours and carbon dioxide. Catalytic converters are made up of ceramic monolith, aluminium, titanium, silicon and platinum; in a nutshell –it’s a mix of most precious metals. So when your converter expires, you can go for smelting catalytic converters, and recover some money out of it. These converters are good, as they are proven for reducing pollutant emission at various implementations.
