Design of experiments DOE – An information gathering exercise to study variations due to controllable / uncontrollable factors. To achieve desirable product quality by design, Taguchi method suggested a three stage process: - System design (conceptualization/synthesis) - Parameter design (finding appropriate design factor levels) - Tolerance design (change in products/processes) Parameter design allows for improving the quality without requiring different process/equipment/material etc.
Parameter design Two types of parameters : • Control factors – can be easily controlled such as material choice, cycle time etc. • Noise factors – Difficult / not possible / too expensive to control, such as usage conditions, temperature etc. Orthogonal Arrays (OAs) are employed in Taguchi’s method to systematically vary and test different levels of each control factors.
Orthogonal arrays Some commonly used orthogonal arrays
Factorial DOEs All possible combinations x2 x1
Space filling DOEs Only one point in one row/column x2 x1
