RSS Feeds • RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. • RSS feeds are just a special kind of web page, designed to be read by computers rather than people • The Emerald RSS feeds allow you to subscribe to either a digest of new content for all journals for the last seven days or to individual journal feeds.

Journal usage impact factor • Emerald articles may not be so widely cited, but we know from our download stats analysis that they are widely read, particularly by the key audiences of “management students” and “studious managers”. • Communicating research to these audiences is just as vital as informing the academic debate, but there is currently no fair measure for this type of use. • Emerald researchers are therefore developing a Journal Usage Impact Factor (JUIF). This is calculated in a comparable way to the conventional impact factor, but is based on full text article downloads rather than citations.

Journal usage impact factor • The JUIF could provide a valid measure of an article’s dissemination. • If an author is only interested in influencing peers in the world of academia, then purely focusing on a journal’s citation impact factor may be best for that author • However, some research (Seglen, 1997) has shown that a journal’s impact factor is not really representative of the individual journal articles. • But if authors are also concerned about how an article impacts on current and future managers and on best management practice, then a journal’s JUIF may provide a more valid measure.

Journal usage impact factor The test results from the research demonstrate: • There is very little relationship between the ISI citation impact factor and the JUIF • There no significant relationship between the count of citations and the JUIF. • This is because they are measuring very different things: ISI measures an article’s direct contribution to the academic body of knowledge whilst the JUIF measures an article’s dissemination and readership.

TOC alerting service (TOCRoSS) • In academic libraries students often choose search engines such as Google in preference to the library catalogue or the choice of databases and electronic secondary sources made available by the library • Using TOCRoSS, e-journal TOC data will be fed automatically into library catalogues without the need for cataloguing, classification or data entry. • This will improve the accuracy of records, save time for library staff and deliver a more integrated OPAC experience to library users.

Emerald InTouch • Since the launch of the Emerald Literati service for authors and editors in 1991, we have been looking for new and innovative ways to serve the needs of our academic research community. • Feedback from our authors recently indicated that they wanted to extend their networks and meet new research partners across the globe. • This led to the research and development of Emerald InTouch – a web 2.0 space designed to support learning, collaboration and networking.
