  5. Positioning and philosophy – Emerald looking forwards Emerald is more than a publisher – we’re a philosophy • We believe in application of ideas • We believe that good management can – must – make a better world • We believe in inclusivity, internationality, innovation and independence • We believe in the ecology of knowledge and diversity of ideas • We believe we’re all stronger together

  6. Positioning and philosophy – Emerald looking forwards • A better-managed world is a fairer one • A better-managed world means better government, better business, more equality, meritocracy of race, age and gender, more employment, more wealth • A better-managed world is one where we care for our surroundings and our future • Global fair trade • Application of technology and intelligence to global problems

  7. Make the world better managed • Management research needs to be relevant and rigorous – focus on issues of social importance (this isn’t always the case) • Publishers are important drivers of management research • Emerald’s distinct and unique position • We need people (scholars, students, business people) to work with us, write for us, help us – we can’t do it ourselves

  8. Research you can use • Good research will inform good management • Good research is research you can use • Good research is accessible and applied – not research for its own sake • The world of research can’t just talk to itself – needs to talk to the world of practice

  9. Imagine… Will we see a better-managed world? We believe we should. We believe we need to work towards • Global fair trade • Less poverty • More literacy, more education, more knowledge – more wisdom • Application of technology and intelligence to global problems

  10. Join us? • You can write for us • You can bring the ideas of scholars and researchers into your libraries, institutions and businesses with a wide range of Emerald collections • You can talk to us, explore with us, imagine with us – try to make a difference with us

  12. Being published means… • Your paper is permanent – published material enters the ‘body of knowledge’ • Your paper is improved – through the interventions of editors, reviewers, sub-editors and proof-readers • Your paper is actively promoted – it becomes available to a huge audience • Your writing is trustworthy – material which has been published carries a QA stamp. Someone apart from the author thinks it’s good

  13. Being published also means dissemination Emerald now publishes… • 56,000 articles online, or over 13 years of content • 9,000 abstracts from 1989-1994 • 17.2 million downloads in 2006; projected 20 million in 2007 • 64% of customer usage occurs outside the UK

  16. What’s new? • Some developments • Some new projects

  17. Some developments • Expanded RSS feeds, including podcasts • Digitizing Emerald journal back files • ROMEO Green policy

  18. RSS Feeds • RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. • RSS feeds are just a special kind of web page, designed to be read by computers rather than people • The Emerald RSS feeds allow you to subscribe to either a digest of new content for all journals for the last seven days or to individual journal feeds.

  19. RSS feeds updates The Emerald journal RSS feeds are updated every seven days. By subscribing to the feed you will be notified immediately once the content has been made available by Emerald.

  20. Some new projects • Journal usage impact factor • New TOC alerting service • Emerald In-Touch

  21. Journal usage impact factor • Emerald articles may not be so widely cited, but we know from our download stats analysis that they are widely read, particularly by the key audiences of “management students” and “studious managers”. • Communicating research to these audiences is just as vital as informing the academic debate, but there is currently no fair measure for this type of use. • Emerald researchers are therefore developing a Journal Usage Impact Factor (JUIF). This is calculated in a comparable way to the conventional impact factor, but is based on full text article downloads rather than citations.

  22. Journal usage impact factor • The JUIF could provide a valid measure of an article’s dissemination. • If an author is only interested in influencing peers in the world of academia, then purely focusing on a journal’s citation impact factor may be best for that author • However, some research (Seglen, 1997) has shown that a journal’s impact factor is not really representative of the individual journal articles. • But if authors are also concerned about how an article impacts on current and future managers and on best management practice, then a journal’s JUIF may provide a more valid measure.

  23. Journal usage impact factor The test results from the research demonstrate: • There is very little relationship between the ISI citation impact factor and the JUIF • There no significant relationship between the count of citations and the JUIF. • This is because they are measuring very different things: ISI measures an article’s direct contribution to the academic body of knowledge whilst the JUIF measures an article’s dissemination and readership.

  24. TOC alerting service (TOCRoSS) • In academic libraries students often choose search engines such as Google in preference to the library catalogue or the choice of databases and electronic secondary sources made available by the library • Using TOCRoSS, e-journal TOC data will be fed automatically into library catalogues without the need for cataloguing, classification or data entry. • This will improve the accuracy of records, save time for library staff and deliver a more integrated OPAC experience to library users.

  25. Emerald InTouch • Since the launch of the Emerald Literati service for authors and editors in 1991, we have been looking for new and innovative ways to serve the needs of our academic research community. • Feedback from our authors recently indicated that they wanted to extend their networks and meet new research partners across the globe. • This led to the research and development of Emerald InTouch – a web 2.0 space designed to support learning, collaboration and networking.

  26. A brief history… • Author network of over 70,000 academic researchers – the Emerald Literati Network. Supported by: • Annual Best Paper Awards • Research Grants • Newsletters • Calls for Papers • Social media is part of a growing trend: • YouTube was acquired by Google for $1.65 Billion. • MySpace has 120 million users. • Technorati reportedly tracks 53 million blogs every day!

  27. Challenge: How can Emerald use emerging and new technologies to support its academic research community?

  28. What is Emerald InTouch? • Online space that supports learning, research and collaboration. • Tools include: • Blogs • Wikis • Files-sharing • RSS • Community Building & Networking

  29. Emerald InTouch users can… • Create personal knowledge repositories and e-portfolios. • Capture elements of informal learning (reflections, discussions or comments). • Create communities of practice based around courses or interest areas. • Find and collaborate with future, present or past students/peers.

  30. Some benefits for users • Reduces isolation • Captures informal thoughts and reflections • Encourages networking and collaboration • A single, integrated space • Supports the bridge between informal and formal learning.

  31. More and better managers • “Developing world countries need more and better managers in order to grow– not more economists; not even more engineers.” Alfredo Paster, Prof of Economics, IESE Barcelona
