  5. Methodology • Oral trauma & non-trauma conditions defined using ICD-9 codes on hospital discharge data. Primary diagnosis only • Data analyzed by gender, residence (11 metro county vs. non-metro county), age-group, hospital charges and community income levels • Excluded: Oral cancers, surgical correction of birth defects. • Oral Trauma n=32,553 (2000-2010) ICD-9 Diagnostic Codes: 873.60 -.69, 873.70 -.79; primary diagnoses only Examples of hospital-treated oral trauma: Broken tooth, open wound of internal structures of mouth, etc. • Oral (non-traumatic) Conditions n= 136,982 (2007-2010) ICD-9 Diagnostic Codes: 520.0 – 529.9; primary diagnoses only Examples of hospital-treated non-traumatic dental conditions: Disorder of tooth development and eruption, abscess, periodontal disease, gingivitis, dentofacial anomalies, malocclusion, and other diseases of the internal structures of mouth.
