What we are • A unique 1 year program for students who have met their high school academic requirements for graduation • A program for students seeking an additional year of schooling in transition to workforce or post-secondary schooling • A program to help develop employment skills and become more informed about individual life and career choices • A place to continue to learn in a non-traditional setting located on a college campus while participating in work based internships and community events • A place where students benefit from a vocational based curriculum and work based learning to continue the development of their transitional skills • We are Not: a fifth year of high school

Where are we? • We are located at he Friedman Center at JWU Harborside Campus • Education in Action in partnership with the Providence School Dept provides us space t and resources to operate the Academy • Students are not attending JWU - They have JWU ID’s, use campus facilities such as the REC Center, Computer Lab and space at Education in Action, but do not attend college classes

Who can apply • Students between age 18-21 • Have an IEP • Met all academic requirements for high school graduation • Be ORS eligible • Have a completed vocational evaluation prior to leaving high school • Student who needs assistance in the area of transition, specifically seeking employment skills and transition knowledge to become work ready • Is motivated to attend and participate in all required activities of the Academy

Year at a Glance • We have 14 students • 8:30 – 1 :00 M-F • Sept – Oct: Assess Skills – Abilities – Interests – Resume/Interview Skills – Mock Work Days - Guest Speakers • Nov – Dec: Internship #1 8 weeks - Tues/Weds/Thurs • Jan – Feb: Internship #2 Job Task Analysis – Skill Building • Mar – April: Internship #3 Employer Evaluations & Employment Plans • May – Final Portfolio Prep and Presentation of Transition Plan • June 9 – Graduation 9-11 JWU Rec Center • JWU student mentors – Outside agency applications – Computer Skills – Community Events - Budgeting – Applications to Job Training Programs -

What’s next • December 15 Meeting with Guidance Counselors and other Special Ed Staff • Weds Meetings at schools • IEP Team Recommendations • Feb 1, 2011 - Early Application Submission Date to Nancy Stevenin • Feb 11, 2011 (10 am– 1 pm) and (4 – 7 pm) - Academy Open House • Feb-March - student interviews and observations by academy personnel • April 1, 2011 - Application Deadline to Nancy Stevenin • April 8 , 2011 (4 – 7 pm only) - Academy Open House • April-May - student interviews and observations • May-June – Acceptance /Diploma Withheld • IEP Amendment - Additional Year with Transition Goals • July-August – Develop Individual Student Plans for 2011-12 Year
